History of Raksha Bandhan

Every year as per the Hindu calendar this festival is celebrated on a full moon day in the month of August. The festival reminds the love and affection of brothers and sisters bond. On this auspicious day, every sister ties a sacred thread called Rakhi to their brothers wrist. On return, the brother promises her to protect from all upcoming dangers. Apart from that, the sisters receive gifts from their brothers on this day.
According to the history, there are many stories which signify the origin of Raksha Bandhan. It is believed that Indrani in ancient time tied a thread around her husband given to her by Lord Vishnu. It was to save the life of her husband from the danger of demons during the period of war between the Gods and demons.

The Mahabharat too depicts a story of the origin of Rakhi festival. It believes that once the great  Lord Krishna got his finger cut and was bleeding seriously. Draupadi treated him through tying a part of her sari. It is believed that was the reason why he saved Draupadi at the time of her Cheer Haran by Kaurava.

Hindus celebrate the festival with family at home through preparing sweets like Kaju Katli, Jalebi, and Burfi. Raksha Bandhan is a festival which signifies the love and duty between brothers and sisters. Raksha Bandhan shows the sister's love to her brother. The festival is all about a Bandhan of a holy thread demonstrate their love and affection. On this day the sisters pray for the prosperity and happiness of their brother. And at the same time, the brothers promise for the lifetime protection of their sisters. It is a festival where the brothers head the responsibility of their sisters and make them happy by giving them gifts.

In terms of Sanskrit literature, Raksha Bandhan means the tie or knot of protection. People observe the festival in the month of Shravana on a full moon day according to the Hindu calendar. Not only Hindus but many other people also celebrate the festival nowadays. All the rituals of the festival are observed religiously. The brothers pledge to support their sisters in all adverse circumstances and promise to take care of them in future.  They give gifts to their sisters on the day to make them happy and bring a smile on their face. The festival really strengths the relationship of brothers and sisters. Apart from real brothers and sisters, the festival is celebrated among cousins as well.
